A new pantry!

Thank you for stopping by!  I am excited about my first post for Metamorphosis Monday, hosted by Susan at 'Between naps on the porch'.  Unfortunately I don't have any "before" pictures.  I will require that you use your imagination.....you see this used to be the closet in my laundry room that contained my very large 30 plus year old heater.  As I have shared before, my home has very little storage space so I am always trying to squeeze in a little more.  After researching and dreaming of alternative locations for my heater I came up with the perfect location.  I have two crawl spaces under my house.  Those of you on the west coast will understand.  --No basements out here, although at one time my house did have a root cellar.  At any rate, one crawl space is exceptionally large and very accessible, so we relocated our new heater there and Voila! - Space for a new closet!

Of course it need a floor.  We added a wood floor that matches my laundry room perfectly.  It already had electricity so we installed a darling little overhead light that I found at a salvage shop in Berkeley.  Bead board on the walls and shelves all painted in a bone color were installed.  Here are the results.

This is the moulding on the shelves.

The shelving is floor to ceiling with quite a bit of space on the floor to store some of my larger appliances.  The shelves are at a variety of heights.

The closet is a walk-in however I didn't feel it was large enough for shelves on all sides so one wall is blank.  I think I need to hang some plates on it, don't you?

This final picture is of the door--something else I needed to replace.  The door we removed was  hollow core and very ugly.  This door matches the others in the room.  I added hardware that is reproduction but matches the hardware elsewhere in the room.

After over twenty years of living in this house without a pantry I am thrilled!

  1. Oh Paula! I love it! It reminds me of a much larger version of the pantry I had in my old Victorian many moons ago. Storage space of any kind is at a premium for older homes! And I say YES...hang plates on the wall!!! lol...Debbie
I'm still in awe of those quilts!!

  5. It's beautiful! I have a walk-in pantry, but I am afraid that at this old house, it's full of "practical" things -- from old Tupperware to extra rolls of paper towels. Nothing nearly as lovely and inspiring as your gorgeous shelves. Thanks for the glimpse! -- Cass

  13. Wow, that is terrific. I liked that you used bedboard or wainscoat board and molding to trim it out. Looks like it has always been there. Bet it is wonderful to get all organized!

  14. I had DH add shelving to two sides of a broom closet in our home over 30 years ago. I also added a pegboard on the empty wall you faced when you opened the closet door. I used it to hang seldom used, but necessary items that were being kept in my kitchen drawers.

We no longer live in that home, but I still miss my pegboard. In our present home I haven't figured out a place to put one that would be out of sight, out of the way, and out of the dust being constantly generated in the kitchen. I really like your idea of hanging plates also, but would they offer visibility in this location.

This project came out to be very functional and I know you will enjoy your pantry no matter what you decide to do with your empty wall.

  17. Paula, Thank you so much for stopping by my blog! I lov3e yours!!!! What a great pantry. I have a large one, but it is still unrenovated. It is painted dark green(???) and the light fixture no longer works, because we found a leak from the tile shower above. It is always something. So we have stopped using the shower until we can afford (with 2 girls in college) to replace the pan and re-tile with the beautiful green tiles from the '20s. I can still store things in the dark pantry, but until we fix the bathroom, no re-do. There is always something which I know you understand!!! I have not redone the kitchen at all. It was functional, but unattractive, since the family that lived here before always had help. Again, when I get at least one out of college, I am dying to re-do the kitchen. We have renovated the girls' rooms upstairs, but they are not Victorian. I plan to show them in upcoming Met. Mondays. Thanks again for stopping by! :D Jewel
